EDWARD DE BONO'S MESSAGE
30th March 1997

More Bonto's, The Habit of Creativity and Conferencing

Some time later this year there will be two very important announcements on this website and in this message section. One of them will have to do with the launch of the new language which I have designed.

Some new bonto's are given here:

  • 1st line: suprise action
  • 2nd line: reason for action
  • 3rd line: result of action
  • 4th line: general philosophical reflection
Rhyme: a, a, b, b.
JP dyed blond hair green
to be more visible and seen.
Some said it looked nice.
Most think bizarre a vice.

Colleen ate some soap
She has given up all hope
She frothed at the mouth.
To go North don't go South.

Major tore his hair
When faced with Tony Blair.
He knew not what to do.
With ideas more beats few.

Major tore out his hair
When infuriated by Blair.
He became very bald.
Don't panic when stalled.

Nancy chews tea leaves
Whenever she peeves.
She becomes very tart.
Sulking is an art.

Nancy cuddles the cat
She always does that.
The man feels jealous.
Love should be zealous.

Mary ate some cake
for she has belly-ache.
She became very sick.
Remedies are not quick.

Mary wanted a cuddle
to help sort out a muddle.
She felt happy and warm.
Peace is good in a storm

Pauline went to her shrink
She said it helped her think.
Together they made it worse.
Over-analysis is a curse.

Edward can always make a bonto
He's fast and quick and pronto.
The results are quite bad.
Worthy failure is so sad.

Edward can always make a bonto
He's fast and quick and pronto.
The results are quite good.
To try can lead to could.

The bonto exercise may seem very trivial. It is and it is not.

I intend to mix in both serious subjects ( like crime and democracy) and more light hearted sujects. Creativity does not always have to be solemn.

The advantage of something like the Bonto is that you can immediately see if your creativity works. You can tell if your bonto is good or is not good - unlike many other creative exercises.

THE HABIT OF CREATIVITY:

With creativity there has to be motivation. Then there are specific processes - such as the techniques of lateral thinking. There are also the micro-strategies that apply in particular situations. These can only be built up through practice in those situations. Then they become a habit.

As you get better and better at bontos you will develop your own micro-strategies. Do you start with the bizarre first line and then try to catch up with logic? How do you find rhymes? How do you set about improving the first version? In time you will get better and better at making bontos.

Although the official season for bontos ends soon, you can continue to send them in. "Set yourself a permanent task of five bontos a week - as a discipline.

Always remember that the final line in a bonto must stand alone as a philosophical point. This final line should also make sense when connected to the previous lines. For example, "Don't panis when stalled", and "Love should be zealous", stand alone. This is very important.

THE CONFERENCE & EDUCATION SYSTEM

A conferencing & educational system has been set up on one of the websites and which is accessible from all the sites. We shall shortly be setting up private conferencing 'rooms' on the system predominantly for use by the Team. These rooms will be for special purposes and access will be through userID and passwords. For example there will be special rooms for Team members to exchange ideas. There will be another room for guided practice in lateral thinking etc. Later, courses may be run in special rooms. Practice sessions begin this Sunday. (see Creative Team)

As always the key questions to ask yourself are:
  1. Is creativity important?
  2. What are you doing about it?
When competence, information and technology are all commodities, creativity is going to be the most important human skill. And it is a learnable skill - not some mystery talent.
