EDWARD DE BONO'S MESSAGE
31st August 1997

"DESIGN CONFERENCE ON NORTHERN IRELAND"

The Design Conference on Northern Ireland is going well. Many creative and constructive ideas are being submitted. The simplest way to access this conference is to go to the website chapter on the Northern Ireland Conference.

The value of the conference seems to be in the following areas:

  1. An opportunity for anyone to put in new possibilities and new concepts. These enrich the field of consideration. Once thought an idea cannot be unthought.
  2. Valuable new concepts or beginnings of ideas.
  3. A sense of the general trend of thinking. This can be obtained by looking through the submissions.
  4. A challenge to creative thinkers to come up with new and better ideas (more practical and nore acceptable).
  5. An important new use of the Internet: Design Conferences on major issues.
  6. An opportunity for young people to put forward their ideas.

The Conference formally opens on September 1st. Quite soon after that the more constructive thinkers will be invited into the middle ring for further constructive thinking.

Please see my more specific comments on the submissions.

I shall be speaking at the TED Conference in New York on September 25th. I hope to be able to introduce some new material and new software.
As I mentioned in my previous message my newest book HOW TO BE MORE INTERESTING(Viking) has just been published. This is about developing habits of mind and habits of perception which enrich the world around you. Just as a pair of spectacles enriches the world around for a short sited person so we can develop skills of perception which make the world a more interesting place. You cannot change the length of your legs or the colour of your eyes but you can change the use of your mind.
