MESSAGE FOR WEEK BEGINNING 7th January 2002 E-Mails and Viruses It is said that one in a hundred e-mail messages now contains a virus. This is down from one in a thousand a short while ago. Anti-viral software does a good job but often seems to be a step or two behind the designers of viruses. There seems to be a need for a more radical approach. Concept suggestions are invited. May be we shall be constrained to use pre-packaged formal messages which can be more easily cleared of viruses. May be the receipt and transmission needs to be completely separated.
