MESSAGE FOR WEEK BEGINNING 3rd June 2002 ..maintenance and problem solving We are obsessed with problem solving. Consultants are callled in to 'solve problems' just as a doctor is called in to cure illmess. In the health field, however, for some time now there is an increasing emphasis on improving health even when someone is not actually sick. This attitude has not yet spread to the business sector where 'maintenance and problem solving' are considered sufficient (supplemented by mergers and aquisitions). The result is that most organisations are operating way below their asset potential. The purpose of thinking is not only to deal with problems but to make better use of what is available. The purpose of design is to put together known ingredients to create fresh value. Complacency may be a management value but is not a shareholder value.
