There are at least three good reasons why people do not seek new ideas. The first reason is complacency. They are very happy with things the way they are and see no benefit in change. The second reason is they would indeed like new ideas but do not know what to do about it except wait for inspiration or copy a new idea someone else uses first. The third reason is the belief that analysis of new information will logically provide all the new ideas that you need.
Complacency is absurd. Things might be going very well but a new idea could make them go even better. There is no limit. It might be a new idea that simplified matters or cut costs. It might be a new idea for a new product or service or a marketing idea etc. etc
People who do see the need for new ideas but do not know what to do about it should read the next message where I shall be putting forward a ‘new idea service’. Or they should learn the skills of lateral thinking.
Those who believe that all new ideas will come from new information are completely mistaken. A new idea may arise from looking at old information in a new way or putting old information together in a new way. There is an absolute mathematical need for creativity and innovation.
If you prefer to let other people start the new ideas and then seek to copy them you may be missing important opportunities. Edward de Bono 20th August2009 Go to top
