The CoRT 6 set of Thinking Lessons stands entirely on its own and can be
used on its own. Nevertheless it is part of the CoRT Thinking programme which was
originated by the Cognitive Research Trust of Cambridge. That is where the CoRT comes
from. It can also be regarded as being short for cortex, which is part of the brain
where thinking is believed to take place.
The "action" in the title of this set of lessons suggests that the purpose of
the thinking is to end up with some action. Indeed the Operation stage sets forth specific
action steps. The thinking id therefore contrasted with thinking that is contemplative. It
is made clear, however, that explanation or description is a legitimate purpose of
thinking. In this sense "action" also refers to the deliberate "putting
into action" or "act" of thinking. This implies purpose and deliberate
application as distinct from reverie. It is almost as if the teacher were to say
"let's have some action", meaning mental action or thinking.
