EDWARD DE BONO'S MESSAGE If we look at the brain as a self-organising information system then there is nothing magical or mysterious about creativity. Such systems form asymmetric patterns and creativity involves moving across such patterns. There are deliberate tools and methods for creativity which can be learned and used. These act in the same way as an enzyme which holds chemicals in certain positions so that they can interact with each other to produce new chemicals. Thousands of people have learnt these methods through seminars or through the APTT training as indicated elsewhere on this site. The most underused asset in business is the brain power of employees. Just telling people to 'think' and motivating them to do so is very weak. There is a need to learn how to think. We are not bad at analysis, judgement, argument and 'get by' thinking. We are good at identifying the right standard routines to use and then using it. But we are not so good when standard routines do not apply and when creative and design thinking is needed. These matters are largely neglected in education so such thinking skills need to be acquired later. CURRENT EXERCISE: Visitors to this site are encouraged to submit 'bontos' as indicated in the previous messages. A ' bonto' is a four line poem rhyming aa, bb. The first line is a bizarre action. The second line is the explanation of the action. The third line is the result of the action. The fourth line is a general philosophical reflection.
Examples: cos it interfered with drinking His thoughts flowed faster. To relax is to master. Kathy yelled at Max She enjoyed such attacks Max looked astounded Anger may be unfounded.
