EDWARD DE BONO'S MESSAGE
27th April 1998

The 'de Bono Laws'

I am setting down here some 'de Bono Laws' which must be very obvious to anyone who has been reading my work. They may well overlap with other 'laws'.

  1. Any self-organising system with a time line must produce patterns.
  2. Such patterns are necessarily asymmetric.
  3. With asymmetric patterns there is an essential need for creativity.
  4. In such systems there is an absolute need for provocation and for random entry.
  5. Any valuable creative idea will always be logical in hindsight.

I sense a growing frustration with our existing thinking systems. But education and other institutions are locked into a very stable equilibrium. What are the sensitive points in the system? What are the points where significant influence for change can be exerted - and how? How can the Creative Team and other like minded people make a difference? I welcome suggestions. (Send suggestions to edwdebono@msn.com with subject: 'de Bono Laws')
