MESSAGE FOR WEEK BEGINNING 19th March 2001

'analysis' and 'design'...

People still find it difficult to see the huge difference between 'analysis' and 'design'.

'Value' is to 'Design' as 'Truth' is to 'Analysis'.

With analysis we seek to 'recognise' standard elements or situations. We do this in order to understand the situation and to know what to do about it. Analysis looks at 'what is there' already.

With analysis we put things together in order to create and deliver value. The design is not there until we put it there.

Education has always been totally obsessed with truth and analysis. Design has been almost completely neglected and has been relegated to graphic design, dress design and architecture. It is considered that design is not part of everyday thinking. That is a real disaster which has continued for centuries. That is why we are so poor at conflict resolution. Judgement only makes conflicts worse. There is a need to design a way forward.
