MESSAGE FOR WEEK BEGINNING 23rd July 2001

Concept R&D

In my book 'Surpetition' I suggest the idea of 'Concept R&D' I have become more and more convinced of the need for this. Technology by itself is not going to provide the values of the future. Technology will support and make possible value concepts. But these value concepts need to be designed in the first place.

Organisations need to get their heads around the importance of concepts. Concepts can occur to anyone but there is a need for a more formal focusing process if the flow of concepts is going to be powerful. Settiung up Concept R&D department is the first step that is needed. This provides confirmation of the importance of concepts and frees people up to work on concepts.

To expect concepts to flow from technical R&D departments is like expecting a noodle cook to make sandwiches.
