MESSAGE FOR WEEK BEGINNING 22nd April 2002 BEIJING At the end of April I shall be visiting Beijing for ten days. I have been to Shanghai before but not to Beijing. I am looking forward to getting a better grasp of 'Chinese thinking'. There is no doubt that they are a highly intelligent and highly industrous people. The GDP of China is growing by between 9 and 11 per cent per year. It has been said that historically China missed out on 'creativity' because of the rigidity of the Manadarin education system. It is said that they never developed the 'hypothesis' and so their technology (which was far ahead of the West two thousand years ago) fell behind. I shall be interested to learn more directly about these things. If China does add 'creativity' to its intelligence and hard work, the result could be very powerful.
