MESSAGE FOR WEEK BEGINNING 7th April 2003

POSTCARD GOLF

This is an indoor game. You place two dinner plates on the floor in your house or apartment. They should be in different rooms and can be quite far apart.

Each player has a postcard. You are not allowed to fold or bend the card in any way. You are not allowed to tear or cut the card in any way. You are not allowed to add anything to the card such as chewing gum, paper clip etc.

The objective is to get your postcard from one plate to the other in the least number of throws (strokes).

You stand behind one of the plates and throw your card in any way you like, in the direction of the other plate. The other player or players do likewise. Each player then moves to where his or her card has landed. Standing behind the card (in the direction of advance) a player picks up the card and throws again. The last throw is where the card lands fully on the second dinner plate. No part of the card must rest on the ground. Just touching the plate is not enough, the card must rest entirely on the plate. Each player now adds up the total number of throws (strokes) needed to reach the plate.

The process is now reversed. Players proceed from the second plate back to the first plate. The to and fro progression can be carried out an agreed number of times.

A variation is to have several plates and to proceed from one to the next in the direct progression. The plates must, however, be quite far apart.

The winner is the player with the least number of throws (as in golf strokes).
