MESSAGE FOR WEEK BEGINNING 16th August 2004

Crocodiles

There are three important principles to be drawn from the following story. What are they?

An Englishman arrives in Queensland, Australia, and wants to go for a swim. He finds a beautiful secluded bay with a sloping beach. The beach is empty apart from an old man sitting on a rock. He asks the old man: "Are there any crocodiles here?"

The old man says: "No".

The Englishman wades in until the water is up to his knees. He asks again. Same answer. When the water is up to his waist he asks again. Same answer. With the water up to his neck he asks: "Are you quite sure there are no cockodiles?"

"I am quite sure. I have said so."

"How can you be so sure?"

"Because there are plenty of sharks and they ate the crocodiles."

Never mind the biological possibility of this story. There are three important principles to take from the story. What are they?
