MESSAGE FOR WEEK BEGINNING 28th March 2005 GOLD MEDAL
In my book, THE SIX VALUE MEDALS, the first medal mentioned is the GOLD MEDAL.
Gold is valuable so the suggestion that this is the most important value - in the end. The Gold Medal stands for "human values". These are 'people' values.
The values may include recognition, appreciation, reward and attention. The negative values in this area include humiliation and being ignored.
When General Electric asked the creative people in that organisation what reward they would like for their creativity, they answered 'recognition'. This is what matters to creative people - and it is not expensive. I did a lot of work with DuPont and they used to give 'hero-status' to people who had ideas. This meant recognising them in the in-house media, at meetings etc. Far better to call together and give a drink each month to everyone who had submitted a suggestion rather than to wait months and reward only the most effective suggestions.
