MESSAGE FOR WEEK BEGINNING 16th May 2005

GLASS MEDAL

Another of the medals in my book SIX VALUE MEDALS is the Glass Medal.

Glass is a simple and basic substance but creativity can turn glass into beautiful ornaments or powerful telescopes. It is the creativity and design that matter.

So the Glass Medal symbolises the values concerned with innovation, creativity and change. This is the opposite of routine and repetition.

Change for the sake of change is never creativity. There must be a real value arising from the change. But if we never try to change things, at least in our thinking, we are never going to get better value.

So the Glass Medal refers both to the effort to be creative and also to new ideas that need trying out or exploring further.

Decisions, choices and strategies that promote innovation have high Glass Medal values.

It is important to emphasise that Glass Medal values refer not only to values that arise from an innovation but also to the effort to be innovative.

(The book is published by Vermillion Press in London)
