MESSAGE FOR WEEK BEGINNING 27th June 2005

Africa

The trouble with Africa was that it was civilised too early. A stable, people based, civilisation reached a local equilibrium. There was no need for navigation or agriculture since food was all around. So mathematics and science did not develop. This put the civilisations at the mercy of the more technically equiped peoples. The introduction of concepts like Christianity, democracy, and human ights tended to erode the old tribalism without putting in a practical alternative. While Africa may indeed benefit from more rock concerts to raise awareness, the biggest need is for a programme to teach thinking at all levels. That is the first step out of poverty.
