MESSAGE FOR WEEK BEGINNING 8th August 2005

Thinking and the Curriculum

Philosophy is not about action but about analysis. This is needed and useful. But things have to get done.

There is design thinking and constructive thinking. These are needed to make things happen.

Unfortunately this type of thinking is almost totally neglected by education systems because education is run by traditional analysis not by ‘doers’ who are too busy doing to want to teach.

EVery education authority should make a serious effort to answer the following question:

“Which parts of the school curriculum directly develop the thinking required for constructive thinking, design thinking, creative thinking and operational thinking?”

For several years I was chairman of Young Enterprise Europe which had one and a half million youngsters in Europe, Russia and Israel. These youngsters would set up mini-businesses while still at school.
