MESSAGE FOR WEEK BEGINNING 19th September 2005

DESIGN

The attitude of most education systems to 'design' is appalling. Design is mainly seen as visual design as in fashion and graphic design. This does not extend to product design and architecture.

The emphasis in education at all levels is on analysis and understanding. You analyse a situation so you can identify the standard elements. Then you apply the standard answers. This is excellent - but it is not enough.

Design is the putting together of things to deliver value. There is just as much design needed in designing a law as in designing a dress.

Design should be a fundamental part of education but it is not. What happens is that design is looked after by the traditional design people and therefore always remains in the traditional area. This is the case with the Design Council in the UK.
