MESSAGE FOR WEEK BEGINNING 12th June 2006 font>"Objectivity in reporting"
I always suspect a certain amount of carelessness/dishonesty from semi-serious newspapers like the Guardian. But from the Financial Times I would expect strict accuracy. I was therefore rather surprised to find in an interview with me June 3/4 that there were nine specific errors of fact. Some might have been carelessness but some seemed to be deliberate dishonesty in order to fuel the tone of the interviewer's agenda.
This is not what I expect from the Financial Times for if this paper loses a reputation for accuracy and honesty it has nothing left.
Readers also find it particularly insulting that editors deny them proper access to matters of interest by employing journalists who are incapable of presenting the subject objectively. Readers of the interview in question will learn very little about my book H+ which would be of much more value to them than the personal views of the interviewer.
