MESSAGE FOR WEEK BEGINNING 26th June 2006

Democracies

I have a personal list of eight reasons why democracies are not good at having new ideas. The most fundamental is that a new idea is a contradiction. Democracies are supposed to represent the current thinking of the electorate. By definition, a new idea is not usually current thinking. Then the people who go in for democratic politics are usually lawyers, teachers, journalists etc. It is more difficult for engineers, architects, designers etc. to enter politics because if you do not get elected you cannot easily go back to your old position.

I want to invite readers of this message to send in their ideas on why democracies are not designed to have new ideas. (edwdebono"msn.com subject 'Democracy')
