MESSAGE FOR WEEK BEGINNING 25th January 2010

too trapped in traditional philosophy

If 'thinking' as a skill is ever going to be introduced as a formal subject in education how is this going to happen? It may depend on an individual like Luis Alberto Machado in Venezuela. This means a talented individual who sees the need and the practical possibilities and is in a position to make things happen.

Would philosophers be in the lead? Probably not because they are too trapped in traditional philosophy with its emphasis on analysis and description. They are also trapped in logic which is only a very small part of operational thinking.

Every university should have an open-ended faculty of 'thinking' which should be quite separate from philosophy and psychology.

In its rush to be considered as a serious science psychology it has focussed on measurement. This is almost the exact opposite of operational thinking.
